Brief description:

Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London is a research organisation and higher, secondary education establishment The Blizard Institute is the largest of 6 Institutes in the Medical School with 400 staff and students. It has had an outstanding success in terms of national rankings in 2008 in the national research assessment exercise. In UoA4, the Blizard Institute was ranked equal 1st with Edinburgh and Cambridge on the basis of percentage of high quality (4*/3*) outputs (80%).

 

Main tasks attributed:

Prof Hitman’s main contribution will be in genomics in which he has 28 years experience. Exemplified by his involvement of genome wide association studies in type 2 diabetes leading to seminal papers in Science, Nature and Nature Genetics between 2007 and 2010 and recent work in epigenetics (PLOS One 2010). He also has extensive RCT experience exemplified as a co-prinicpal investigator (PI) of the CARDS trial which was the first trial to establish the importance of statins in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes and which has informed international guideline development. He is also PI of 2 diabetes prevention trials in East London.
