Principal Investigator: Prof. Rafael Simó

Brief description:

Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, the leading hospital complex in Catalonia is one of the largest in Spain with a total of more than 1400 beds and by means of its Reseach Insitute (VHIR) is a leader centre in biomedical research at a national and European scope. We are working to achieve a direct translation from research to applications. Our research is focused on solving human health problems and on healthcare improvement. At the same time, we resolutely encourage the tasks of valuation and transfer of research results to the industry and biomedical companies. Innovation is the core of our activity, not only understood as processes of innovation, information technologies' innovation or knowledge in biomedical research transfer, but innovation derived from the incorporation of new technologies and from daily healthcare practice.

Main tasks attributed:

Professor Simó has authored over 100 articles related to diabetes in peer-review journals (most of them in journals with high impact factor) and has participated in 22 projects related to diabetic retinopathy (DR). One of his fields of expertise is the study of DR biomarkers (ie. Masmiquel et al. Serum laminin as a marker of diabetic retinopathy development: a 4-year follow-up study. Am J Ophthalmol 2000;129:347-52). Apart from Laminin-P1 the following potential biomarkers of DR will be measured : N-carbiximetil-lysine, Asymetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and specific retinal proteins or their circulating mRNA (ie. Interphotoreceptor-binding protein [IRBP], rhodopsin and RPE-65).
